Resources

The fourth element focuses on what is already available to achieve the desired result. Think of skills, knowledge, people, tools, or past experiences. Within NLP and coaching, this element is often seen as one of the most valuable steps, because it shifts the focus from shortcomings to strengths. Relevant questions include: What resources do you already have at your disposal? What has helped in the past? Who or what can provide support?

Effects

The fifth and final element looks beyond the immediate goal. What is the broader impact once the desired outcome is achieved? This element gives meaning to the process and motivates you to keep going, even when things get tough. Related questions include: What will change once the goal is achieved? What impact will this have on the environment? What makes this result worthwhile?

Together, these five elements form a logical and powerful framework that helps teams, coaches, and professionals move from a superficial problem description to in-depth analysis and targeted action. You can place these elements on a timeline as shown in the example below.

What questions do you ask when using the SCORE model?

The SCORE model only truly becomes valuable when the five elements are translated into targeted questions. These questions help you look beyond the initial problem description and examine, step by step, what is really going on.

The questions do not always have to be asked in a fixed order. An answer may prompt you to return to a previous element or, conversely, to look further ahead. The most important thing is that all five elements receive sufficient attention.

Questions about the symptoms

When examining the symptoms, we look at what is currently visible, noticeable, or perceptible. These are the signals that indicate the current situation is undesirable.

Examples of questions include:

  • What is going on right now?
  • What exactly do you notice about the problem?
  • When does the problem occur most often?
  • In which situations does the problem not occur or occur to a lesser extent?
  • What consequences are already visible?
  • Who is affected by the situation?

It’s important to describe the symptoms as specifically as possible. A statement like “collaboration isn’t going well”, for example, is still too broad. Missed deadlines, unclear agreements, and recurring conflicts provide a clearer picture of what’s actually happening.

Questions about the causes

After identifying the symptoms, we investigate what caused them or what is perpetuating them. This is not just about a single direct cause. Often, it involves a combination of behaviors, beliefs, circumstances, and past events.

Examples of questions include:

  • What caused this situation?
  • When did the problem first occur?
  • What happened right before the problem arose?
  • What factors are perpetuating the problem?
  • What assumptions or beliefs are at play?
  • What will happen if nothing changes?

In this step, asking follow-up questions is essential. The first explanation isn’t always the actual cause. For example, a heavy workload may seem like the visible problem, while unclear priorities or poor task allocation are actually causing the situation.

Questions about the desired outcome

The Outcomes section focuses on the situation someone wants to achieve. A good outcome describes not only what needs to go away, but especially what should take its place.

Examples of questions include:

  • What do you want instead of the current situation?
  • What does the desired situation look like in concrete terms?
  • What will you do differently once the goal is achieved?
  • What will you notice, see, or hear then?
  • When will you be satisfied with the result?
  • How can you determine that the change has been successful?

An outcome such as “experiencing less stress” becomes more meaningful when it becomes clear what someone actually wants. This could mean, for example, that tasks are well-organized, boundaries are set earlier, and there is enough energy left at the end of the workday.

Questions about available resources

Resources are all the tools that can help achieve the desired outcome. These can include personal qualities, as well as knowledge, time, tools, past experiences, or support from others.

Examples of questions include:

  • What do you need to achieve the goal?
  • What knowledge and skills do you already have?
  • When has something similar worked before?
  • What did you do differently back then?
  • Who can offer support or feedback?
  • What resources, time, or information are available?
  • What is a first feasible step?

These questions prevent the focus from being solely on what is missing. In many situations, important resources are already available, but they are not yet being used consciously or purposefully.

Questions about the effects

The “Effects” section looks beyond the immediate result. The central question is what broader consequences the desired change will have for the individual, the team, the organization, or the environment.

Examples of questions include:

  • What changes when the desired outcome is achieved?
  • What are the short- and long-term benefits of the result?
  • How will the change affect others?
  • Are there any potential negative consequences?
  • Is the outcome consistent with other goals and responsibilities?
  • Why is this change important?
  • What will become possible once this problem is solved?

By also considering the effects, it becomes clear whether the desired outcome is truly appropriate and sustainable. A solution may seem attractive in the short term, but at the same time create new problems. This final check helps ensure a balanced decision.
