What is Application Management? The meaning

Application management, or application maintenance, concerns the entire process of managing, maintaining and improving an application during its life cycle.

This type of management encompasses many best practices, procedures, methodologies, techniques and other aspects that are critical to ensuring a functioning product that delivers an optimal performance and efficiency.

The most important stakeholders in application management are the application owners, the application developers and the application users. The application owners are business managers who see application management as a means of increasing business productivity, revenue and control.

The application developers and managers are responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of the application. The users are often employees. For this group, security and control of the activities are both important.

Life cycle application management

This type of management is about the entire life cycle of an application, from start to finish. This type of management is an enterprise-wide discipline that is designed to work as optimally and efficiently as possible. Everything within application management is optimised as much as possible, from user experience to the integration of back office functions and company databases.

The application management process

This type of management is the process of managing applications over the duration of their entire life cycle. The typical life cycle of applications consists of six phases. These phases are listed below.

  1. Determining the requirements
  2. Design phase
  3. Application development, integration and testing
  4. Implementation
  5. Application start
  6. Optimisation

During the first phase, the development team works together with the various business units to determine the functional requirements for the new application or amendment.

During the second phase, the application team translates the previously established requirements into a practical and technical solution.

During the third phase, the application is effectively coded and tested. The way the application works is closely monitored with performance software and the application is adapted where necessary. In the implementation phase, the application is deployed.

The fifth phase involves working with the application and managing its performance. If any defects are established, the organisational departments can still make amendments to the application. During the sixth and final phase, the application development is completed.

During this process, the following aspects apply:

  • Change management
  • Reporting
  • Resource management
  • Software engineering
  • Configuration Management
  • Coding
  • Problem management
