N. Venkatraman obtained in 1976 a Bachelor of Technology (B.Sc.) from the Indian Institute of Technology and in 1979 a MBA degree from the Indian Institute of Management. Next to that he obtained his doctorate (Ph.D.) in Strategic Management from the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh in 1985.

Prior to joining the BU School of Management, he worked as an assistant and Associate Professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management for eight years.

In 1998, he was awarded the McGrath Chair at Boston University. N. Venkatraman specializes in the application of a network-centric approach of business strategy, IT strategy and IT sourcing. He excels at integrating the Internet, intellectual resources, alliances and partnerships. Furthermore, he introduced a framework, the value centre for managing IT resources.

He developed a famous concept with John C. Henderson: the business IT alignment, in which an organization is able to use information technology (IT) effectively to achieve its desired business objectives.

His message is purposeful, non-technical and general. This is to make people think about the opportunities and challenges that arise as we move away from the industrial age into the new economy.

In the summer of 2008, he was recognized by the Journal of Management as the 22nd most cited scholar in management of the past 25 years. This worldwide ranking is an indication of his widespread influence in the field of management.

N. Venkatraman is a visiting professor at the London Business School and an assistant professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management. N. Venkat Venkatraman received an honourable mention for his dissertation and he is Head of Research at the Systems Research Center at the Boston University School of Management.

In addition he is a full-time faculty member of the IS-faculty and the Strategy & Innovation-department. N. Venkat Venkatraman has received many awards and distinctions for his ground-breaking achievements.
