What is personal effectiveness?

In short, personal effectiveness means getting the best out of yourself. It is an approach to success in which all energy, skills and motivation are used to achieve goals and develop as a person. Individuals with strong personal effectiveness tend to strive to achieve more, advance their careers, and grow both professionally and personally.

What personal effectiveness looks like in everyday life differs from person to person. Everyone has their own standards for success and progression and therefore working at the highest level of personal effectiveness will be characterized by several things.

A personal trait that is linked to achieving personal effectiveness is assertiveness. Assertiveness is described as the ability to stand up for yourself in a way that is not hurtful to others.

Meaning and definition of personal effectiveness

Personal effectiveness can be defined as: using resources such as time, energy and skills to achieve and develop goals.

Why is effectiveness important?

Personal effectiveness is a trait often associated with positive well-being and considered as a critical component in leading a successful and fulfilling life. In a professional sense, it is almost always about becoming more productive and motivated in achieving goals.

People who understand themselves well, including their qualities and pitfalls, deal better with unexpected situations and setbacks. They lead more fulfilling lives and have more confidence in themselves than people who are still searching for themselves.

Focusing on developing skills that lead to personal effectiveness is therefore very important. It enables people to stop and think about what they really value in life and what they really want to achieve.

In addition, personal effectiveness is an important quality that makes people stand out in the workplace. People with strong personal effectiveness are great to work with, are good at what they do and consistently deliver what they promise.

Personal effectiveness examples

What performing at the highest level of effectiveness looks like, differs from person to person. The road to the top does look broadly the same when it comes to developing certain properties.

An example of a method that describes how to reach the pinnacle of effectiveness is outlined in Stephan Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. The seven qualities that Covey describes in this book are as follows:

  1. Be proactive
  2. Begin with the end in mind
  3. Put first things first
  4. Think win-win
  5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood
  6. Synergize
  7. Sharpen the saw

Another example is the Personal Accountability Model. This model shows how you take final responsibility for your own situation and how you achieve effectiveness.

How to improve: training and more

Numerous training and courses are offered, both online and offline, for reaching the pinnacle of this skill. Proper guidance can ensure that people pursue their goals with more confidence and pleasure. During thses trainings, the roles of various characteristics are discussed.

Some of these characteristics are briefly described below.

Determination

Determination is one of the better qualities people can possess when it comes to reaching the pinnacle of effectiveness. People with this quality can often motivate themselves well and reach their goals faster than people who do not possess this quality.

Confidence

People who are strong in effectiveness have more self-confidence because they understand themselves and their abilities well. If you have an idea of what it looks like to get the best out of yourself, it is obvious that you will stay motivated.
