What is a Change Management Strategy?

A Change Management Strategy is the way in which an organization approaches a particular change. It is a pre-empted mechanism to ensure that any negative side effects brought about by profound changes are minimized and to benefit from the transformation. In other words, a change strategy is a “better safe than sorry” approach in the event that change occurs.

Various experts point out the usefulness of a good change management strategy in organizations. An example of this is John Kotter. He developed an 8-step process to support organizational leaders in large-scale change initiatives. Kurt Lewin shows how and why change generally occurs in organizations with his Change Model. Only by understanding organizational change can leaders and managers determine the right change strategy. Other examples of organizational change models include the ADKAR Model, Bridges’ Transition Model and McKinsey’s 7S Framework.
